Samsung introduces new app to prevent texting and driving
Each day in the United States, more than a thousand people are injured and nine people are killed in accidents involving distracted driving, according to the National Highway Safety Administration.

Samsung introduces new app to prevent texting and drivingAnd these numbers are increasing – not only in the U.S., but across the globe, thanks to the ever-growing popularity of smartphones and mobile devices.

Hoping to do something to reduce these numbers, Samsung has introduced its new “Eyes on theRoad” app, which prevents drivers from texting and driving. It’s currently being tested in Singapore, and it’s expected to be introduced to other markets once they’ve worked out the kinks.

How this texting and driving app works

So, you’re probably wondering how a smartphone app can tell if you’re texting and driving. Here’s how it works:

  • The app uses your phone’s sensor fusion technology and GSM cell towers to measure your speed, which is how it can tell if you’re in a moving vehicle.
  • If it concludes that you are in fact driving, your SMS text messages, phone calls and social media notifications will be hidden.
  • The app will then reward you for using it with Shell gas vouchers and discounts on your auto insurance.

However, there’s a flaw in this process that you’ve probably already picked up on: even if you are in a moving vehicle, the app has no way of knowing if you’re the driver or the passenger. To get around this problem, the app does include the ability to switch it off.

Taking responsibility behind the wheel

Yes, technology is a wonderful thing, and yes, it can absolutely help make our lives easier and more manageable, in ways both big and small. But that doesn’t change the fact that we can’t rely on technology to make sure we’re doing the right thing. We’ve got to take responsibility for our own decisions and our own lives when we’re behind the wheel.

Instead of texting and driving, wait until you’ve reached your destination to check and respond to your messages, emails and notifications. And to make answering your phone a little less enticing, turn off your notifications or volume before entering your car. If you don’t hear that beep, you’re less likely to pick up your phone.
